Maritime Communications
A world leader in VLF communications
Over 45 years of experience
Our active involvement in the development, installation and commissioning of VLF (Very Low Frequency) commmunications products across the globe began in the 1980s. Today, we are recognised as one of the world leaders in this niche communications technology.
Technology for the entire communication chain
Our equipment are installed at Communication Centres, transmitter sites, reference systems, and submerged platforms at sea.
Compatible with latest standards
Our VLF product portfolio has maintained compatibility with the latest NATO STANAGs, from the original 5030 to the current 4724 and 5065 (LF) standards.
Continued support, refinement and technical refresh
Delivered via long-term contract with national governments, NATO and Prime Contractors.
Over 45 years of experience designing, developing, installing and commissioning VLF/LF communication technologies, products and systems, with equipment spanning the whole broadcast chain.

View datasheetVLF Demodulator Equipment
Our VLF/LF Demodulator enables continuous, off-air data recovery of MSK and FSK transmissions from VLF/LF radio receivers and are configurable to either single or dual demodulators.
Whilst the equipment was designed for platform installation, it can also be used for shore-based, off-air monitoring applications. It is compliant with NATO STANAG 5030 Edition 4 and capable of implementing NATO STANAG AComP 4724*.
The demodulator was developed using our proprietary complex numerical modelling environment, which supports link budget estimation, seawater penetration predictions and provides overall system performance analysis.
*Currently pass-through mode (ALT LEF); future Black side hardware and interface are compliant.
Designed to meet all the requirements of NATO STANAG 5030 and future STANAG 4724 implementation, available in either a dual or single demodulator configuration, both providing a remote-control facility.

Our Dual Modulator System (DMS) is compliant with NATO STANAG 5030 Edition 4, NATO STANAG 4724* and upgradable to be NATO STANAG 5065 compliant.
The DMS is a derivative of the Drumgrange Traffic Formatter, Modulator, Synthesiser and Antenna Tuning system (TMSAU), which was specifically designed to comply with NATO STANAG 5030 requirements and was one of the first in its class to be fully compliant against this standard.
Today, the DMS supports FSK, MSK1, MSK2 and MSK4 together with OTAM, keystream interfacing, antenna fine tuning and remote control. It can be supplied as a single modulator system if required.
Similarly to the Demodulator, the DMS was developed using our proprietary complex numerical modelling environment, which supports link budget estimation, seawater penetration predictions and provides overall system performance analysis.

VLF Studies
Our proprietary numerical computer simulation model can provide users with an interactive graphical environment to evaluate the communications performance of various VLF systems.
Our model was developed in Matlab, implemented in Simulink (running within Matlab) and validated using actual sea trials data.
How it works:
- The model measures communication performance by measuring the character error rate for a given system configuration and signal to noise environment.
- Decoded characters are compared with the original characters transmitted and a record of the number of characters tested in a trial.
- The model logs the number of errors detected and the associated character error rate.
- Users can adjust various parameters to conduct parameter sensitivity assessments. Examples of adjustable parameters include signal timing delays and atmospheric noise, introduced via a Gaussian Noise model

VLF Consultancy Services
The partner of choice for your VLF projects.
Drumgrange offers VLF consultancy services based on significant technical understanding of the overall VLF systems. In addition to the provision of critical technical guidance, subject matter advice and Design Authority advice on the overall VLF system, we specialise in picking up communications issues and constraints which might not be immediately apparent to the design team.
How we can contribute:
- As a VLF communications advisor supporting the programme team
- By providing critical technical guidance using the project design and testing phases
- By providing modulators, demodulators and interconnectivity equipment to meet specific programme<>requirements.
- By supporting experimentation and sea trials activities that would be needed to demonstrate performance of the system, for example by providing guidance on test plans, VLF communications performance measurements, providing specialist test equipment, or providing analysis of communications performance.
The partner of choice for your VLF projects, providing technical guidance built upon industry-leading technical understanding of overall VLF systems.
