SonaTag Consortium receive funding award under European Union FP7

Drumgrange is pleased to announce it is a member of the SonaTag Consortium that has been awarded funding under the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The award of €1.3M to the SonaTag Team will be used to develop a whole system solution for the effective acoustic marking of subsea cables and pipelines using innovative passive acoustic reflectors coupled with state of the art sonar and display techniques.

Our reliance on safe and continuous delivery of offshore energy or uninterrupted connectivity across the global network requires safe and effective methods for managing and maintaining the increasing quantity of subsea cables and pipelines. The SonaTag Project brings together a Europe-wide consortium of leading experts in the fields of materials, subsea engineering, acoustics, sonar design and manufacture, data processing, and visualisation methods to develop a new tagging system that will provide subsea engineering contractors and offshore field operators with a method for uniquely identifying “their” pipelines during laying, inspection, maintenance, repair and decommissioning activities.

The Project extends the previous work of Lead Partner SALT Ltd. The other partners are Nextis, Novamina, Silicone Solutions, SonarSIM, Technalia and UK Intelligent Systems Research Institute.

Drumgrange’s contribution is in support of the sonar system and signal processing development activities leading to manufacture of the sonar sub-system.

The project will run from November 2013 and January 2016.
